The Senate Judiciary Committee likely will propose a hearing for next Wednesday with both Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who accused him of sexual assault, CNN reports.
According to CNN’s sources, the committee will send a proposal to Ford’s lawyer, offering to hear her testimony first and Kavanaugh’s second. Outside counsel would ask any questions. Ford had requested that the judge testify first, but that goes against the committee’s rules and would not give Kavanaugh the opportunity to respond to Ford.
An aide to Senate Democratic leadership told CNN that members of the party object to the plan to have outside counsel ask questions.
"Outside counsel doesn’t vote on Kavanaugh. Senators do. Republicans need to do their jobs and not hide," the aide said.
