Fox News anchor Bret Baier confessed on Friday that he made a "mistake" reporting that the FBI's ongoing inquiry into the Clinton Foundation would "likely" result in an indictment, CNN Money reports.
Baier said Wednesday that sources in the FBI informed Fox News that the probe into the Clinton Foundation would probably lead to an indictment, which was repeated by The Hill and Real Clear Politics. NBC News, ABC News and CNN all refuted the report.
On Thursday, Baier admitted that he'd spoken "inartfully," and that the FBI said they had "a lot of evidence that would, likely lead to an indictment," but "that's not, that's inartfully answered. That's not the process. That's not how you do it."
The next day he added, "that just wasn't inartful, it was a mistake and for that I'm sorry."
According to the initial report, the investigation is a "very high priority" for the White Collar Crime division of the agency, and that they had "a lot of" evidence. One source added that "there is an avalanche of new information coming every day."
"We talked to two separate sources with intimate knowledge of what's going on with the FBI investigations," Baier said Wednesday night, an hour after the report was made, according to CNN. "The investigations will continue, there is a lot of evidence. And barring some obstruction in some way, they believe they will continue to likely an indictment."
ABC News said the report was "inaccurate and without merit. CNN's Evan Perez said about an upcoming indictment: "Everything we've known about this investigation – that's been going on well over a year – is that that's not true."
