Broward County, Florida, Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes will collect nearly $130,000 a year in pensions when she steps down from her post in January, the SunSentinel is reporting.
The embattled elections chief will continue to receive a $58,560 pension from her past employment as an educator. On top of that, she will add about $71,000 a year for serving in her elected post, the newspaper said.
Snipes came under strong criticism for her vote counting process during the midterm elections.
She submitted her resignation after a messy recount in Florida. She had taken over as elections supervisor in 2003.
“It really raises the question, on top of everything else, why she’s being excessively compensated for doing a poor job,” said Dominic Calabro, president and CEO of Florida TaxWatch, a nonpartisan government watchdog group. “That’s the added insult to injury.
“While she’s entitled to it, a lot of Floridians are resentful of it.”
Snipes, who is currently paid $178,865 a year as supervisor of elections, did not respond to the newspaper’s request for a comment.
