The former head of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement has a message for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: put the American people ahead of politics.
Thomas Homan, the former acting director of ICE, was on Fox News on Monday morning to talk about Democratic opposition to the construction of a border wall between the United States and Mexico. Pelosi said the Democrat-controlled House will not allocate any money for a border wall, a sticking point in the ongoing government shutdown.
"I would say Nancy Pelosi, you need to love your country a little more than you hate this president," Homan said. "Your No. 1 responsibility is to protect Americans and secure our border. We have already shown how a wall or barrier can be effective. So put politics aside. This is all politics.
"They don't want this president to have a win on the border, but what they don't understand is when the president wins on this issue, America wins. America is more secure, less drugs get across, less guns get across, less illegal immigration."
The shutdown began Dec. 22 after lawmakers could not come to an agreement on border wall funding. With Democrats now in control of the House chamber, it's looking increasingly unlikely that President Donald Trump will secure the money necessary to build the wall.
It was reported Monday that the White House might tap the military to build the wall if Congress doesn't provide the funding.
