President Donald Trump revealed Wednesday he plans to visit America's southern border with Mexico in the coming weeks for a "ground breaking" for the border wall.

According to a White House pool report, Trump took questions from the media during a surprise Christmas visit to Iraq to see U.S. troops stationed there.

Trump said he will be "going to the wall" before the State of the Union address, which is scheduled for Jan. 22.

Regarding the partial government shutdown, which began at the end of last week because lawmakers were unable to agree on funding Trump's border wall, Trump said it will go on for as long as it takes to get the money he desires.

"Whatever it takes. We need a wall. We need safety for our country. Even from this standpoint," Trump said. "We have terrorists coming in through the southern border."

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said Wednesday that Trump is serious about securing money for the wall, which he has vowed to build since he first announced his candidacy for president in 2015.
