Apprehensions by the Border Patrol along the U.S.-Mexican line fell in June, according to preliminary data obtained by CNN.

It marks the first month since January apprehensions have dropped, according to the news network. In all, there were 95,000 apprehensions on the border last month, compared to 132,887 in May. However, the June figures were still much higher than the same time last year, when 34,089 people were apprehended, CNN noted.

A drop in border crossings is common during the summer months, but acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan has downplayed the role of seasonal trends.

Last week McAleenan credited Trump administration initiatives for the expected decline in apprehensions.

Customs and Border Protection did not comment on the unofficial numbers, according to CNN.
