Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who last week added drugstore giants CVS and Walgreens to a lawsuit claiming they played a large role in creating the opioid crisis, said Tuesday pharmacies should have seen red flags when millions of pills were flowing through their businesses.

"Doctors have gone to prison and we shut down the pill mills," Bondi told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."

"Florida has an opioid crisis, along with every state in the country, and every year, record numbers of people are dying and we have got to do something about it."

There are efforts now being made to slow down the flow of pills, said Bondi, and she does applaud that, but "they were all part of the problem and they have to be part of the solution."

CVS has issued a statement, noting that it has taken numerous actions to strengthen safeguards while addressing the nation's opioid epidemic. The chain also reported that in the past five years, there has been a 38 percent decrease in opioid dispensing through retail pharmacies, Fox News reported Tuesday. Walgreens would not comment on the pending lawsuit.

"I applaud them for what they are doing today," said Bondi. "This goes back to 2008 when this crisis started, and millions and millions of pills were flowing out of these organizations. Manufacturers and distributors and our lawsuit tells a comprehensive narrative as to how this happened and again we applaud the efforts they are doing now, but they have to be part of the solution because clearly they were part of the problem, and they know it by the numbers and the information we have."
