GOP Releases List of Proposed U.S. Spending Cuts
Wednesday, 09 February 2011 12:21 PM EST
U.S. House Republicans released a list of proposed cuts in federal spending including reductions to environmental programs, public broadcasting, high-speed rail, aid to pregnant woman and arts programs.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers, a Kentucky Republican, said “every dollar we cut has a constituency, an industry, an association or individual citizens who will disagree with us.”
Still, he said in a statement, “We will respond to the millions of Americans who have called on this Congress to rein in spending to help our economy grow.”
Rogers said the committee tomorrow will release a full list of 70 cuts totaling $35 billion, compared with last year, or $74 billion less than President Barack Obama proposed in his 2011 budget.
The list released today includes proposed cuts to programs including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation, Amtrak and the Food and Drug Administration.
