Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., said he will step down as chair of the House Freedom Caucus by the end of the week, The Hill reported.
Good narrowly lost his reelection bid in August by 400 votes, sending the two-term congressman packing after being losing in a primary to state Sen. John McGuire. McGuire will face Democrat nominee Gloria Witt in November in the conservative-leaning district.
"Upon my recount being completed on August 2, I had told the board that I was submitting my resignation as chair, effective when the board decided to act upon it," Good said.
Good had fallen out of favor with many inside the GOP after several attempts to disrupt the Republican agenda, including voting for the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Good also endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over former President Donald Trump before DeSantis had even declared his candidacy. DeSantis was of the founding members of the Freedom Caucus in 2015 when he was a representative from Florida.
The House Freedom Caucus is comprised of the most conservative Republican members of Congress and embraces traditional GOP principals such as limited government, spending decreases, and opposition to illegal immigration.
Politico reported that Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., and Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., are possible replacements for Good.
