Sen. Roy Blunt: Approving Defense Bill Vital for American Protection

By    |   Saturday, 13 Jun 2015 09:04 AM

The government's most important role is to protect American citizens, Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri said in Saturday's GOP address, charging that President Barack Obama and Senate Democrat leaders are opposing the passage of the bipartisan troop funding bill until spending for Washington's bureaucracies is increased.

"We can spend all the time we want talking about other priorities and all the other things we should be doing, but almost every American and an overwhelming number of Missourians, agree with me: the most important role of the federal government is to do the one thing we sure can’t do by ourselves — defend our country," Blunt said.

Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid has called debating the National Defense Authorization Act as a "waste of time," Blunt says, adding that "providing for America’s active-duty military service members and the security of our nation is never a ‘waste of time.’"

Further, Obama has threatened to veto the bill unless funding is provided for other agencies, such as the IRS and the EPA, said Blunt

The senator, a member of the chamber's Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, said he understands the importance of eliminating wasteful spending, reducing bureaucracy and streamlining military functions, and the new bill "identifies $10 billion in in excessive and unnecessary spending and reallocates those funds to military capabilities."

Further, he said the bill modernizes the military retirement system by creating retirement accounts and matching saving, which will benefit 75 percent of service members, compared to the current retirement program that benefits fewer than one in five service members.

Further, the new bill creates bonuses for those who want to make the armed services a career, including for people who want to stay for more than 20 years.

The bill will also maintain quality of life programs for armed services members and their families and takes new steps in treating mental health issues.

At the same time, the bipartisan bill will continue critical assistance to Israel, and direct upgrades to combat the growing threats in cyberspace.

“We live in a challenging time where threats are numerous and the landscape is continually changing," said Blunt. "It is a moral imperative to provide for our national defense and for the service members, veterans, and their families that protect and secure our freedoms."
