Study: Blacks Most Politically Engaged in Minnesota

Black voters are most politically engaged in Minnesota and Idaho and the 2018 midterm elections saw the highest black turnout percentage-wise, a new survey finds.

Key results in the WalletHub study, released Wednesday:

  • Minnesota is where African Americans are the most politically engaged, followed by Ohio, South Carolina, Missouri, and Massachusetts.
  • Blacks are the least politically engaged in South Dakota, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia.
  • 75% of black voters in Idaho cast a ballot during the 2018 midterms, the highest of any state. 14.29% of black voters did so in South Dakota, the lowest number.
  • 100% of black voters in Idaho were registered to vote in the 2018 midterms. 27.59% of black voters were registered in Utah, the lowest rate of any state.
  • Colorado had the highest percentage of black voter turnout for the 2016 presidential election, followed by Maine, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Kentucky.

According to a Pew Research Center study cited by WalletHub, black voters are expected to account for roughly 12.5% of the electorate in the November presidential election.
