The U.S. has obtained intelligence that Hamza bin Laden, the son of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden is dead, NBC News reported Wednesday.

The network news, which attributed its information to three unnamed U.S. officials, said it was unclear if the U.S. had confirmed the death and no details were provided when, where, or how he died.

NBC News said his last known public statement came in 2018 and was released by al-Qaida's arm. That statement threatened Saudi Arabia.

He is believed to have been born around 1989. Hamza bid Laden appeared in al-Qaida propaganda videos. He was regarded as a potential successor to his father, who led the terror group when it attacked New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Osama bin Laden was killed by Navy SEALs in 2011 during a raid in Pakistan. Letters seized during the raid showed bin Laden was grooming his son to take over.

Bin Laden's son was named a "specially designated global terrorist" in January 2017.

The State Department announced in February it would pay as much as $1 million for information on Hamza bin Laden's whereabouts. He was described as "an emerging al-Qaida leader" who "has threatened attacks against the United States and allies."

The White House did not immediately issue a comment on the matter.
