President Donald Trump deserves credit for boldly accepting an invitation to negotiate with North Korean President Kim Jong Un but needs to be careful because this is high-stakes diplomacy, former UN Ambassador and Bill Richardson said on Sunday.

Richardson, a veteran negotiator with North Korea, was speaking on "The Cats Roundtable" radio show on AM 970 in New York hosted by John Catsimatidis. He said he was flabbergasted and speechless when he heard about Trump's decision to negotiate with the North Korean leader.

Richardson, a Democrat, admitted that he has "real reservations about the president's foreign policy. But on this one, I think he's gambling for the right reason, [because] things with North Korea couldn't be worse."

However, he also warned that Trump "should not keep saying that North Korea at this meeting is going to denuclearize. They're not going to do it," but, in any case, it would still be an achievement if Pyongyang reduces their missiles or makes some other concession as the start of a process of dialogue.

Richardson also stressed that Trump should not do any tweeting or calling Kim Little Rocket Man and "Just let his professional diplomats run the show."

The ambassador also pointed out that although China will not be a part of this summit, eventually Beijing will be a big factor down the line, because 80 percent of commerce to North Korea goes through China.

Richardson also emphasized that it is vital that Trump keep the Iran nuclear deal, even as he pushes Tehran to behave more positively, because otherwise North Korea will ask itself, "Do we want to work with an America that signs deals with countries like Iran and then withdraws?"
