Kristol: I'm Not Leaving GOP, I Like Party, Keeping Hope Alive for a New Candidate

By    |   Monday, 27 June 2016 05:32 PM

Bill Kristol tells Newsmax TV he has no plans to quit the Republican Party as conservative columnist George Will has done to protest Donald Trump's reign as the presumptive GOP presidential nominee — because a third-party spoiler still may emerge to sink the billionaire real-estate tycoon.

"I like the Republican Party. I don't like Donald Trump, I think he's a bad nominee," Kristol said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"But I'm comfortable with the party of [Sens.] Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz and Joni Ernst and Tom Cotton and Ben Sasse and a whole bunch of pretty good governors and younger office holders. I'm sticking with Republican Party."

Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, has been under heavy fire from some Republicans, for his non-stop criticism of Trump and his hope Trump can be ousted as the party's nominee.

Kristol says, for now, the upcoming election remains a crapshoot for the GOP, but the party is worth not abandoning.

"After November, who knows, maybe everything will fall apart and maybe Trump will win and people like me will have to see how he governs. But no, I'm not leaving any party … I'm OK with most of the Republican Party, most of the time," Kristol said.

On Sunday, Will stunned Washington when he said he has abandoned the Republican Party "for the same reason" he joined it— "I'm a conservative" — and he feels let down by the message of GOP leaders.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," the conservative pundit explained why he "changed my registration to unaffiliated 23 days ago."

"So the long and the short of it is, as Ronald Reagan said when he changed his registration, I did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me," he said.

"I left it for the same reason I joined it in 1964 when I voted for Barry Goldwater," Will explained. "I joined it because I was a conservative. But I leave for the same reason, that I'm a conservative."

Many conservatives doubt that Trump is truly conservative and believe he changes his beliefs depending how it will benefit his campaign.
