Bill Donohue: Reaction to Indiana Religion Law 'Over the Top'

By    |   Monday, 30 March 2015 06:16 PM

Catholic League President Bill Donohue lashed out at the National Collegiate Athletic Association's opposition to Indiana's religious freedom law, saying on NewsmaxTV on Monday that the organization's response has been "over the top."

In an interview on "The Steve Malzberg Show," Donohue decried the "ridiculous" response to a measure that is similar to versions of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act on the books in many other states.

"Now if this was some horrific piece of anti-gay legislation, wouldn’t we know it by now?" he asked. "Wouldn't there be just one case nationwide where Christians are taking to the streets or denying gays their rights? It's nonsense."

Donohue said "everyone is screaming Indiana," but he blasted Mike Emmert, head of the NCAA, which has its "lavish" headquarters in Indianapolis, as "the worst."

"He should actually bring in the bulldozers, raze their entire building," Donohue said.

Donohue has written Emmert a letter
also suggesting he should destroy the NCAA headquarters, which "would include bulldozing your brand-new 130,000-square-foot addition to the NCAA's national office."

"It's not only over the top," Donohue said about the outrage, "it's demagogic"— and he laid partial blame on social media.

"This is what the social media has done in this country," he said. "These people have jumped on this gay-crazy bandwagon and they want to pound their chest in saying 'I am so much in favor of gay rights.' Can't they also be in favor of religious liberty? Why don't we hear a single word from these people's mouths about the necessity of having a Religious Freedom Restoration Act in all states? The gap is rather sickening."
