New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is urging New Yorkers to steer clear of Chick-fil-A's soon-to-open fast-food outpost in Queens because of the Georgia-based company's strong stance against same-sex marriage.

"What the ownership of Chick-fil-A has said is wrong," Mr. de Blasio said at a press conference, according to DNA Info, a New York City news service.

"I'm certainly not going to patronize them, and I wouldn't urge any other New Yorker to patronize them."

But, the mayor added, Chick-fil-A does "a legal right" to operate.

Four years ago, Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy sparked a furor proclaiming Chick-fil-A supported "the biblical definition of the family unit," and noted those with the "audacity to define what marriage is about" invite "God's judgment on our nation."

The conservative company has also reportedly donated $5 million to groups that oppose same-sex marriage.

De Blasio's battle cry came after City Councilman Danny Dromm, who represents the Queens neighborhoods of East Elmhurst, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights neighborhoods said he is kicking off a boycott of the new eatery which will open in a few months.

"This group imparts a strong anti-LGBT message by forcing their employees and volunteers to adhere to a policy that prohibits same-sex love," he said.

"It is outrageous that Chick-fil-A is quietly spreading its message of hate by funding these types of organizations."

Chick-fil-A — which already has locations in midtown Manhattan and Greenwich Village — said its goal is "to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect — regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender," GrubStreet.com reports.

The company told The New York Business Journal it plans to open 10 to 12 fast-food eateries in the New York City metro area by next year.
