Joe Biden’s own children avoided the brunt of strict anti-drug laws he helped draft while in the Senate, drug reform advocates told the Washington Examiner.
Biden’s daughter Ashley, now 37 was charged with marijuana possession when she was 17, but the prosecutor declined to pursue the charges, according to the Examiner. And in 2009, a friend of Ashley Biden attempted to sell a video to the New York Post that he claimed showed her snorting cocaine. The Examiner said police did not get involved.
The Wall Street Journal had reported that when Biden’s son, Hunter, joined the Navy Reserves in 2012, he received a waiver for a drug-related incident. Hunter Biden was discharged from the reserve after testing positive for cocaine, the Journal reported in 2014.
The Examiner said that in 2017, Hunter Biden’s then-wife Kathleen stated in divorce papers that he spent “extravagantly on his own interests (including drugs, alcohol, prostitutes. Strip clubs and gifts for women with whom he has sexual relations).”
Drug reform advocates claim Biden’s children avoided the laws because they are white and wealthy, the Examiner noted.
"Whatever kind of privilege Biden’s children experience in those interactions, they certainly are representative of what happens every day in America,” said Betty Aldworth, executive director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy. “The discretion allowed to prosecutors and the police when deciding who to charge and who not to charge is far too often based on factors like race and economic power.”
