Health care advocate Betsy McCaughey has called this summer's Olympic Games in Brazil a potential disaster and advised everyone to stay away to avoid contracting the Zika virus.

Speaking on "The Cats Roundtable" Sunday radio show on AM 970 New York hosted by John Catsimatidis, the former New York State lieutenant governor said that "If you were going to design a method to take a very severe disease and spread it worldwide really quickly... you would hold an event at the epicenter of that disease, Brazil, and invite 500,000 people to attend. … I sympathize with the athletes who have trained and especially with the Brazilian economy, but the fact is this is going to spread this disease around the world."

She also severely criticized the Obama administration's handling of the Zika virus.
Saying the threat against the U.S. is imminent, McCaughey said "we have to arm our local health departments with the resources to destroy these mosquitoes, but President Obama wants to send half a billion dollars to South America instead of spending it … in parts of our own country that are very vulnerable to this."

McCaughey emphasized the severity of the problem in the United States of all types of super bugs – infections that don’t respond to commonly used antibiotics – saying that everyone is vulnerable to this unless hospitals nationwide improve hygiene.

"There are all new types of technologies . that hospitals could be adopting to provide every patient with a clean hospital room," McCaughey said, stressing that "even the dirt you can’t see … can kill you."

She said that the best thing you could do to help a friend in the hospital is "to forget about bringing the candy or flowers , bring bleach wipes and wipe the surfaces right around [the patient's] bed … that single step, wiping those surfaces down daily with a bleach wipe, could safe your friend's life.

People magazine reports that the first known American athlete has withdrawn from Olympic consideration due to the Zika virus, saying cyclist Tejay van Garderen made the move because of the potential effects it could have on his pregnant wife.
