A British bookmaker says California Gov. Gavin Newsom faces a nearly one-in-five chance of being recalled, offering the betting odds as organizers of the petition campaign climbed within 100,000 signatures of forcing a vote.

Betfair said Newsom had a 17% chance of facing the recall vote, according to Newsweek, with a spokesman telling the online magazine that the odds have seen little change over the past week.

Organizers announced they have 1.4 million signatures seeking Newsom’s recall, just short of the 1.5 million needed, as they aim for 2 million by the March 17 deadline.

The report also comes a day after Politico declared the recall ''inevitable'' as Newsom’s job approval rating dropped to 46%, blamed largely on his response to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus with school closures, stay-at-home orders and restrictions on businesses.

While declaring Newsom a relative long shot of being recalled, Betfair also posted Chamath Palihapitiya, 44, the Sri Lankan-born billionaire chief executive of venture capital firm Social Capital, as a 5-4 choice to replace Newsom in the 2022 election — or earlier, Newsweek said.

Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive, appeared to enter the race on Jan. 26, posting ''It’s on. #RecallGavinNewsom'' to Twitter.

Newsom was a 6-4 pick to win in 2022.
