Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., mocked President Donald Trump's claim last August that wind turbines cause cancer, describing it as an assertion from a "profound scientist."

At a rally at Iowa State University on Saturday, Sanders touched on an issue of importance in Iowa, which leads the country in wind energy.

The remarks were posted by CBS affiliate KCCI; the comment starts at the 1:44-minute mark.

"Trump is maintaining the myth that climate change is a hoax and in fact, is working overtime to make sure that we have more carbon emissions," Sanders told the Ames, Iowa, crowd.

"Trump has also made the profound remark . . . that wind turbines cause cancer . . . and he is a profound scientist, somebody who has reseached the idea for years and uniquely came up with that conclusion," he added to laughs from the crowd.

Iowa has more than 4,000 turbines, which are a part of a $16 billion renewable energy investment in the state, the news outlet reported.
