Rep. Bentivolio's 'Dream Come True': To Write Obama Impeachment Bill

By    |   Tuesday, 20 Aug 2013 11:21 PM

Michigan Rep. Kerry Bentivolio told fellow Republicans in his district this week that he consulted with lawyers and "Ph.Ds in history" to find out "how I can impeach the president of the United States."

Bentivolio made the admission on Monday in response to a question at the August 2013 Birmingham Bloomfield Republican Club meeting that was videotaped and posted on YouTube.

The amateurish video, which was discovered by BuzzFeed, shows Bentivolio responding to a question from a woman in the audience, who pressed him on what could be done to stop Obama "from everything that he is doing against our Constitution."

A male audience member can be heard specifying, "articles of impeachment," to which Bentivolio acknowledged that he had already looked into impeaching the commander in chief.

"If I could write that bill and submit it — it would be a dream come true," he asserted. "I feel your pain. I stood 12 feet away from the guy and listened to him. And I couldn’t stand being there. But because he is president I have to respect the office. That’s my job as a congressman. I respect the office."

Nevertheless, Bentivolio said he invited lawyers to his office, who advised him that he must have evidence before taking such a controversial stand.

"Look, if I get an email from the chief of staff to the president of the United States to Lois Lerner [IRS official on administrative leave] saying that you will target tea party liberty folks ... from getting ... tax exempt status ... and they're being pushed aside, or ignored and/or harassed in any way, shape, or form, that's evidence," he responded.

"Until we have evidence you’re going to become a laughing stock if you submitted a bill to impeach the president because, No. 1, you’ve got to convince the press and there are some people out there, no matter what Obama does he's still the greatest president they have ever had," he said. "That’s what you're fighting."

Bentivolio also said that "if I could write that bill and submit it — it would be a dream come true."

He lamented that he, too, is pained by the president's actions.

"I stood 12 feet away from the guy and listened to him," he said. "And I couldn't stand being there. But because he is president I have to respect the office," he said. "That’s my job as a congressman. I respect the office."
