Rep. Trey Gowdy said on MSNBC his goals are credibility and fairness for the House select committee investigating the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans.
Democrats have been critical of House Speaker John Boehner's decision to form the committee, with some threatening to boycott the group. On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the panel should be evenly split between Republicans and Democrats.

"I do want credibility, and I encourage you to watch the process," Gowdy, the South Carolina Republican who be chairman of the committee, told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Wednesday. "My goal, my challenge, is at the end of this for you to say, 'You know what? He's not very smart, but he was fair.'"
Tuesday, Boehner announced seven Republicans and five Democrats would comprise the committee.
"Do you really that think [Democrats] are going to change their mind with respect to the appropriateness of this investigation if the committee is evenly constituted? I mean, they went from boycotting it to asking it to be evenly constituted," Gowdy said.
The congressman also said he wants to know "why our administration missed episode of violence after episode of violence in Libya leading up to September 11th, 2012," when the attack occurred.
Gowdy said he wanted "all the evidence, all the documents, unredacted." He said he also wanted "access to all the witnesses" before drawing any conclusions whether the White House response indicated "an intent to coverup, negligence, [or] a benign mistake."
