A Wisconsin couple killed a bear over the weekend that attacked them inside their home while their children were asleep in a bedroom after they saw it eating from their bird feeder outside in their yard, CBS News reported.
The couple yelled at the bear in an attempt to shoo it away, but instead the animal charged towards them and broke through a window in their home near Medford and managed to get into the house, according to Fox9.
The man eventually shot the animal with a firearm, but not before the bear injured both of them, the Taylor County Sheriff's Office said, according to CBS News. The couple at first managed to stab the animal with a kitchen knife when it lunged at them.
The couple were both treated at a hospital for several bites and other injuries, but were released.
The bear was an adult female, most likely a mother, as at least one cub was seen running away as the animal rushed toward the home of the couple, according to The News Tribune.
The black bear population in Wisconsin has grown considerably in recent years, according to research conducted by the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR)
The research indicates that there are approximately 24,000 bears in the state, while a study in 1989 found the population to be only about 9,000.
Last month, the DNR requested that state residents report any black bear den locations they find across Wisconsin in order to help out with a new research study that is being carried out.
