President Barack Obama praises Hillary Clinton's motivation to do "what's best for America" — but says her "not always flashy" delivery could use some work.

In an interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation," Obama said "I generally believe there has never been a candidate better prepared for the presidency than Hillary Clinton."

"She's not always flashy, and there are better speech makers, but she knows her stuff," he declared. "And more than anything, that is what is ultimately required to do a good job in this office. "

Obama conceded he was a "huge admirer" of both Dwight Eisenhower and George H.W. Bush, whom he called "one of the most underrated presidents we've had."

"But the skill sets that Hillary has are similar to many of the skill sets that they had, experience in government, experience in working with a wide range of people, solving big, difficult problems, familiarity with the world.," he said.

He added that he's become friends with Clinton, though he admitted "we're not bosom buddies, we don't go vacationing together."

"I think I have a pretty clear sense of both her strengths and her weaknesses, and what I would say would be that this is somebody that knows as much about domestic and foreign policy as anybody, is tough as nails, is motivated by what's best for America and ordinary people…"

He also dismissed arguments that Clinton's handling of classified information — recently described as "extremely careless" by FBI Director James Comey — makes her less fit to be commander-in-chief.

"I think that she would acknowledge she made a mistake," Obama said. "But what I also think is true is that if you've been in the public eye for decades at the highest levels of scrutiny, folks are going to find some mistakes you make."

"On the big stuff, she's got it right," he said.
