Three attorneys identified as part of Robert Mueller's special counsel team have donated nearly $54,000 to Democrats over the years, including to Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign, CNN reported.
Citing Federal Election Commission donation records, CNN reported that of the $56,000 contributed by three members of Mueller's select team, all but $3,000 has been donated to Democrats since 1988.
According to CNN:
- James Quarles has donated $33,000 to Democrats since 1988.
- Jeannie Rhee has donated more than $16,000 to Democrats since 2008.
- Andrew Weissman donated $4,300 to Democratss in 2006-2008.
Only Quarles ever donated to Republicans, with the lion's share of $2,500 to outgoing Rep. Jason Chaffetz in 2015, CNN reported.
Quarles and Rhee maxed out their donations to Clinton's campaign in 2016 — $2,700 each, CNN reported.
Former FBI Director Mueller, appointed by the deputy attorney general of the Justice Department, is heading up the investigation into alleged collusion between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia.
The donation report comes a day after Trump confidante and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich saying that Republicans were "delusional" if they thought Mueller would run a fair investigation.
"Check FEC reports," Gingrich tweeted.
Gingrich followed that up Tuesday morning by saying Mueller was hiring "bad people."
