Muriel Bowser, the mayor of the District of Columbia, signed a bill that would make assisted suicide legal in the district, if it meets approval in Congress, according to the Washington Examiner.

If it becomes law, the bill would allow a terminally ill person 18 years or older who is deemed mentally competent to end their own life. Requirements about reporting such cases for physicians and the district's Department of Health are included in the law, according to the Examiner.

Congress has to approve all laws in the district, according to the U.S. Constitution.

Six states — California, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington – allow assisted suicide for those suffering from terminal illness, the Examiner’s report said.

Compassion and Choices, a nonprofit that supports the right for the terminally ill to take their lives, praised the mayor for the passage of the bill.

"Every terminally ill adult should have the freedom and liberty to make their own decision about how they want to die in comfort and peace, in consultation with their family, physicians, and spiritual leaders," the group's field and legislative manager, Donna Smith, said.

"I want this end-of-life care option to ensure I do not have to suffer needlessly in my last months, weeks or days of life," Dr. Omega Silva, the former president of the American Medical Women's Association, said.

She has been diagnosed with cancer three times.
