The Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day confluence dilemma has been resolved – there will be no slacking, Catholic bishops have said. Restraint, fasting and abstaining from meat is the order of the day.

This is the first time in seven decades that Valentine’s Day happens to fall on the same day as the start of Lent, The Chicago Tribune reported.

On the one hand you have possibly the most romantic day of the year which is celebrated with extravagant dinners, chocolate and other indulgences, but on the other hand you have the day that starts a season of sacrifice, as in what are you giving up for Lent?

Some Christians have been fretting about this dilemma but religious leaders have advised that Lent takes preference over Valentine’s Day.

Bishop Richard Malone of Buffalo pointed out that Ash Wednesday and Good Friday were the only two days of the whole year that required fasting and abstinence, per The New York Times.

“Those who are accustomed to celebrating Valentine’s Day might do so, perhaps, the day before. Join it up with Mardi Gras!” he suggested.

The archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, agreed that Ash Wednesday had precedence, adding that the coincidence of St. Valentine’s Day “would not lift for us the duty of fasting and self-denial.”

Monsignor Michael Picard, pastor of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Newtown Township, Pennsylvania, echoed these sentiments, stating that Ash Wednesday was one of the most sacred days of the church’s liturgical year, according to the Burlington County Times.

“It would be foolish for a Catholic to put the ‘sweetness’ of Valentine’s Day above Ash Wednesday,” he said. “Sacrificing candy for a day would be a great sign of love for all that the Lord Jesus has done for us.”

The Archdiocese of Chicago released a statement in which it noted that “the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community,” CBS News reported.

There is no wiggle room. Lent trumps Valentine’s Day.
