Five young adults identified as asylum-seekers were arrested following the alleged assault of two police officers near New York City's Times Square, ABC News reported.
Last Saturday, two officers reportedly attempted to break up a group of disorderly people when a physical altercation occurred, which prompted the officers to place one person under arrest. The other individuals in the group then began to strike the officers, according to police, before running from the scene.
The officers were treated for minor injuries at the location of the incident.
The suspects were later arrested and identified as Yorman Reveron, 24, Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, 19, Wilson Juarez, 21, Kelvin Serita Arocha, 19, Jhoan Boada, 22.
According to authorities, four of the suspects have been released following their arraignment, while one is awaiting arraignment. Of the four who have been released, one was released under supervision while the other three were released on their own recognizance.
In a statement, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said, "Violence against police officers is never acceptable. It is paramount that we conclusively identify each defendant and specify each participant's role in the incident.
"Every defendant charged so far is facing felony charges that carry a penalty of up to seven years. This is an active, ongoing investigation."
