An associate of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange went missing nearly three weeks ago under mysterious circumstances in Norway and few clues have been unearthed.

The New York Times reported on the missing persons case of Arjen Kamphuis Friday, which has so far perplexed investigators and has led to conspiracy theories because of Kamphuis' ties to WikiLeaks. Various intelligence services, militaries, and even the Clintons have been discussed as potentially playing a role in the disappearance.

The 47-year-old Kamphuis was apparently on a vacation in Bodo, Norway when he left his hotel on Aug. 20 with heavy luggage and dressed in outdoor gear. He planned to travel south to Trondheim, Norway by train and was thought to be planning a kayaking trip in the Norwegian fjords. On Aug. 22, Kamphuis, who hails from the Netherlands, was scheduled to fly home.

Kamphuis, however, was not on the train ride or flight that he had booked and has not been seen since.

There have been a handful of potential sightings, and his cell phone was turned on for 20 minutes a week after he went missing. In that instance, someone tried to use the device with a German SIM card.

WikiLeaks has been accused of working with the Russians and even the Trump campaign to help Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election, so conspiracy theories about Kamphuis' whereabouts are swirling. According to his LinkedIn account, he works as a cybersecurity expert for a Dutch firm.

A woman who claimed to be his best friend posted a message on her Twitter account on Aug. 31, saying everyone in his life is "very, very, worried."
