Jared Lee Loughner was charged with attempting to kill U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and three others and with killing U.S. District Judge John Roll and one other person, federal prosecutors said.
Loughner, 22, is accused of killing Roll and Gabriel Zimmerman, a member of Giffords’ staff and a federal employee, according to a criminal complaint filed today. He is also charged with attempting to kill Giffords and two other members of her staff who are also federal employees, prosecutors said.
Bystanders apprehended Loughner after he opened fire yesterday at a community meeting organized by Giffords outside a supermarket in Tucson, Ariz. Giffords is in critical condition after being shot in the head. Six people were killed in the attack, including a nine-year-old girl.
The case is U.S. v. Loughner, 11-00035, U.S. District Court, District of Arizona.
