Big tech companies should expect regulations coming from the White House and Congress amid the misuse of technology for malicious purposes, data weaponization, and privacy questions, Apple CEO Tim Cook told Axios.

"I think it's inevitable that there will be some level of regulation," Cook told "Axios on HBO" in an interview airing Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. ET. "I think the Congress and the administration at some point will pass something."

President Donald Trump has led an administration with a platform of deregulation, but there are some regulations that might be necessary, according to Cook.

"Generally speaking, I am not a big fan of regulation," he told Axios. "I'm a big believer in the free market. But we have to admit when the free market is not working. And it hasn't worked here."

Protecting privacy should be paramount, no matter the cost of profits or in innovation, he added.

"This is not a matter of privacy versus profits, or privacy versus technical innovation – that's a false choice," Cook said.
