Apple will make organ donation a prominent feature in its Health app when the company's updated mobile operating system is publicly available in the fall.

According to CNET, the app will allow users to register as a donor of organs, eyes, and tissues while using iOS 10. Registration information will be sent to the National Donate Life Registry, part of Donate Life America.

The Associated Press reports that registering as a donor starts by tapping an icon in the Health app.

Apple CEO Tim Cook told the Associated Press the idea of implementing an organ donation feature stemmed from the struggles Apple founder Steve Jobs faced when he was seeking a liver transplant. Jobs died in 2011.

"Watching and seeing him every day, waiting and not knowing — it stuck with me and left an impression that I'll never forget," Cook said.

Software developers will be able to use iOS 10 starting this week for beta testing. When it's released in the fall, the operating system will be available for iPhones and iPads.
