Angela Merkel called for a ban on full-face veils in Germany during a speech after her re-election as conservative party leader on Tuesday.

“The full veil is not appropriate here, it should be forbidden wherever that is legally possible,” Merkel said at the Christian Democratic Union gathering, per CNN. "It does not belong to us.”

In August, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere also called for veils to be banned from public places.

“It does not fit into our society for us, for our communication, for our cohesion in the society…This is why we demand you show your face,” Maiziere said at the time, per CNN.

It’s widely known though that a ban would violate Germany’s constitution, BBC News noted.

Merkel's approval ratings have slipped, especially after her decision to “allow about a million asylum seekers into Germany” during the migrant crisis that plagued the country last year, BBC News noted.

According to U.S. News, about 890,000 migrants came into Germany in 2015.

Merkel, who’s been in power since 2005, was re-elected on Tuesday after receiving 89.5 percent of votes by about 1,000 delegates.
