Former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe Tuesday defended former FBI lawyer Lisa Page and ex-FBI agent Peter Strzok from having any "clear bias" against President Donald Trump while serving as investigators, and said he did not "recall" a meeting with someone named "Andy" they'd referred to in their thousands of text messages before the 2016 presidential election.

"Not once, not from Lisa Page, not from Pete Strzok, and not from anybody else on that team," McCabe told NBC "Today" anchor Savannah Guthrie when she asked him if they exhibited bias while they were sending each other messages disparaging Trump.

He also defended Page and Strzok, who had been involved in an extramarital affair, as "good people who served this country well."

"They made some poor decisions in their private lives and in terms of the communications they exchanged with each other," said McCabe. "That's brought incredible grief and scrutiny on the FBI. I'm sure they regret that, but good people make bad decisions every day."

Further, he said he did not recall either the meeting referred to in one of the text messages or the "conversation they refer to in their private text. It's one, a question I've been asked many times."

In the message, Strzok wrote to Page that he wanted to "believe the path that you threw out for consideration in Andy's office. There's no way he gets elected. But I'm afraid we can't take that risk. It's like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you're 40.'"

McCabe said there were many meetings between himself and Page, who has been acting as his attorney and with Strzok, as well as many others on the investigative team.
