Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe contradicted three White House assertions Thursday — most notably that ousted agency head James Comey had lost the confidence and support of its rank and file.

McCabe told the Senate Intelligence Committee the statement made Wednesday by the White House "is not accurate."

"I hold Director Comey in the absolute highest regard," McCabe said. "I have the highest respect for his considerable abilities and his integrity, and it has been the greatest privilege and honor of my professional life to work with him.

"I can tell you also that Director Comey enjoyed broad support within the FBI and still does to this day," McCabe said. "I can confidently tell you that the majority, the vast majority of FBI employees enjoyed a deep and positive connection to Director Comey."

McCabe made two other contradictions of the White House during questioning.

Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, asked McCabe if it is true the Russia investigation should be one of the smallest investigations happening at the FBI, asserted Wednesday by deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

"The issue of Russian interference in the U.S. Democratic process is one that causes us great concern," McCabe said. "And quite frankly, it's something that we've spent a lot of time working on over the past several months."

Sanders said, in part "it's kind of getting absurd. There's nothing there. There is no 'there' there. It's time to move on."

And though McCabe said more than once he would not comment on conversations between Comey and President Donald Trump, the acting director said it is not protocol for the FBI to inform individuals they are not a target of an investigation.

At issue was whether Comey informed the president on three different occasions he was not a target of the investigation, as Trump has claimed. McCabe said he would comment directly on those claims.

McCabe also told the committee he is not aware of any requests for more resources Comey reportedly made to the Justice Department to carry out the Russia investigation.

McCabe said the FBI has all the resources it needs for the Russia probe.
