New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo lashed out on Sunday at the Republican tax bill, calling it “a dagger at the economic heart of New York.”

Speaking on “The Cats Roundtable” Sunday radio show hosted by John Catsimatidis, the Democratic governor said the GOP legislation is “reprehensible. I call it an economic civil war. They just divided the nation. They're using 12 states, which happened to be ‘blue states’… to finance the tax cut in the other states.”

Cuomo emphasized that these states “get hit disproportionately hard by eliminating what is called the deductibility for state and local taxes. They use New York and California and the other Democratic states as the piggy bank… to fund the other states. I can’t remember the last time you’ve seen this divisive an act along purely partisan lines, and it is a dagger at the economic heart of New York.”

The governor was particularly critical of the Republican congressmen from New York and the other states harmed by the bill, saying that even if they believed in the overall tax plan, they should have protected their constituents by refusing to have it be funded on their backs.

Cuomo also said that the tax plan is not as advertised by the Republicans as beneficial to the middle and working class, but is a giveaway for the rich and also explodes the deficit, which Republicans have always warned against doing.

He said the legislation will be a terrible economic challenge with which to deal, and “I wouldn't be surprised if home values drop, if you saw mortgage foreclosures go up… The economic consequences are going to be a major issue for us going forward."

Cuomo also slammed the federal government’s response to the hurricane in Puerto Rico, saying it should be ashamed. He added that the response would be bad enough if it was to aid a foreign country, but even worse that the people in Puerto Rico are American citizens.

Cuomo emphasized that the federal government “did not give the level of help we needed. They are still suffering. I was there just a few days ago, and it's remarkable how little progress has been made."
