Nearly a third of Americans say Russia poses the biggest threat to the U.S. while their fear of China has spiked at the same time anxieties about North Korea have faded, according to the latest Axios/SurveyMonkey poll.

One year ago, half of Americans said that North Korea posed the biggest threat to the U.S., according to Axios.

The current results, according to Axios:

  • 8 percent say Iran.

Specifically, Americans are most concerned by China's economic power, at 62 percent. Half are most concerned by China's technological advancement, and 35 percent fear China's military strength, according to the survey.

Nearly 60 percent of Americans also fear that a trade war with China will hurt U.S. jobs, a result that has vast differences along party lines.

Those results:

  • 58 percent think a trade war with China is bad for U.S. jobs.
  • 38 percent think a trade war would be good for jobs.
  • 71 percent of Republicans think it's good for jobs.
  • 11 percent of Democrats think it's good for jobs.
  • 32 percent of Independents think it's good for jobs.

The poll was conducted June 15-19 among 3,936 adults. Respondents for these surveys were selected from the nearly 3 million people who take surveys on the SurveyMonkey platform each day. The modeled error estimate for the full sample is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
