About 76 percent of Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck, with little or no emergency savings, according to a new poll.
According to a Bankrate.com survey
of 1,000 adults, less than one-in-four Americans has enough money in his or her savings account to cover at least six months of expenses, the recommended guideline for being able to absorb unexpected emergencies.
The results also showed that 50 percent of respondents have less than a three-month cushion and another 27 percent have no savings at all.
"It's disappointing," said Greg McBride, Bankrate.com's senior financial analyst. "Nothing helps you sleep better at night than knowing you have money tucked away for unplanned expenses."
Even though a larger percentage of consumers report an improvement in their financial position, the survey found that the savings rate has changed little over the last three years.
