American Mom Held Captive by Taliban Describes Brutal Treatment

Caitlan Coleman Boyle, the American mother who gave birth three times while being held hostage by the Taliban for five years, told ABC News that she was beaten and raped as she tried to protect her children.

Boyle said some of their guards would beat her eldest son for "making problems" or being "too loud" and then would hit her when she tried to stop them.

She also said her captors murdered her unborn daughter in a "forced abortion" by putting something in her food. She said she also was raped by two men after she tried to report what they did to their superiors.

Boyle, from Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, was kidnapped while traveling in Afghanistan with her husband Joshua Boyle, of Smiths Falls, Ontario. Their captors then transported them to Pakistan and moved them around frequently.

The family was freed in October by the Pakistani army in an operation along the Afghan border and now lives in Canada.

The couple told ABC they want justice for their abusers.

"Our focus is on trying to hold accountable those who have committed grave human rights violations against us and against others," Joshua said. "I lost a daughter. That was more of a crushing blow to me than the years. What they did was a crime against humanity by international law."

Caitlan sustained serious injuries while fighting to keep her captors from the children, her husband said.

"She had a broken cheekbone," according to Joshua, who said he was shackled for the entire time they were held. "She actually broke her own hand punching one of them. She broke her fingers, so she was very proud of that injury."

The couple said they did the best they could to raise their children in captivity, using discarded items as makeshift toys and teaching their eldest son the alphabet, geography and constellations.

They also used the story of the execution of King Charles I in 1649 to make up a game about beheadings in order to ease their eldest son's fear if the same was done to his parents.

Caitlan was five months pregnant when she was kidnapped and had to hide the pregnancies of her two other children born in captivity. She said her husband helped her when she gave birth.

The couple declined to answer questions about Joshua's past and the circumstances leading to their capture and release.

Joshua was previously married to a fellow Canadian, Zaynab Khadr, whose father was a suspected al-Qaida financer killed by Pakistani security forces. Her younger brother Omar was the youngest detainee at the American terrorist prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba before being released.

When asked why they decided to have children in captivity, Joshua said, "I think it's a sad statement on the state of affairs of the world when a family is asked to justify their decision to have children in any circumstance."
