Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., warned this week that Democrats who sided with Republicans on a conservative amendment to a bill expanding federal background checks on gun purchases were “putting themselves on a list” for a primary challenge.
Democrats held a closed-door meeting Thursday after 26 moderate Democrats joined with Republicans to support amending the bill to require that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement be notified if an illegal immigrant tries to buy a gun.
The move infuriated liberals in the party. During the meeting, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told these Democrats that “we are either a team or we’re not, and we have to make that decision,” The Washington Post reported.
Ocasio-Cortez's spokesman Corbin Trent told the Post that the congresswoman told her colleagues that they “are putting themselves on a list,” and “she said that when activists ask her why she had to vote for a gun safety bill that also further empowers an agency that forcibly injects kids with psychotropic drugs, they’re going to want a list of names and she’s going to give it to them.”
“People need to be aware that coming down the road will be ‘gotcha’ amendments that actually gut the bill, and if we want to be able to move legislation forward, we’re going to have to figure out a way to deal with it,” added House Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern, D-Mass.
