Singer Taylor Swift is urging Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander to vote for the Equality Act, which protects LGBTQ+ people from discrimination.

The pop star also said she rejected President Donald Trump’s stance “that his administration 'supports equal treatment of all’ but that the Equality Act ‘in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights.'"

The House passed the Equality Act in mid-May, 236-173, but the response from the GOP-controlled Senate and the White House is likely to be no.

The bill amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and prohibits discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the public and private sectors. It also offers civil rights protections in businesses, hospitals and welfare services.

Pride Month started June 1.

“I’ve decided to kick off Pride Month by writing a letter to one of my senators to explain how strongly I feel that the Equality Act should be passed,” Swift wrote in a caption on Instagram accompanying her post. “I urge you to write to your senators, too. I’ll be looking for your letters by searching the hashtag #lettertomysenator.”

Swift has become more vocal over the past few months in discussing politics, using her platform to urge her fans to vote.
