Sec. Azar: Plan in Works for Canadian Meds

By    |   Tuesday, 30 July 2019 12:57 PM

President Donald Trump wants to help Americans save on their prescription drug costs through a plan to allow the United States to import medications from Canada, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Tuesday.

Trump is "working on a plan on how we can import drugs safely and effectively from Canada, so the American people can get the benefit of the deals that pharma themselves are striking with other countries," Azar told CNBC's "Squawk Box."

The move would come on the heels of a Trump executive order on healthcare price transparency, an issue that remains vital to the administration, said Azar.

"The specialty interests don't want you to know the price of their products before you have to buy them," Azar continued. "The president said in his executive order he wanted full of transparency of pricing and I ordered our Medicare agency to require hospitals to disclose their charges and disclose what their negotiated discounts are with the insurance plan, so the patient will have the right to have this information before they pick where they will get their services delivered."

He added that the president has a vision for "personalized, affordable healthcare" that puts patients in charge.

Meanwhile, work must be done on out-of-pocket costs for patients who need innovative medicines, he said, adding that most people say they are sick of people in Europe getting a better deal on drug prices.

CNBC reports that in most cases, it is not legal to import medications from other nations for personal use, according to the Food and Drug Administration, and the pharma industry says bringing in drugs could be a threat to consumer safety.
