Republicans have scheduled a markup for articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for 10 a.m. on Jan. 31, according to an internal GOP memo obtained by The Hill.
The plan detailed in the memo tracks with the timeline already pledged by House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green, R-Tenn., who sought prompt proceedings to expel Mayorkas from his current post. Green would not "corroborate a memo" when asked by The Hill.
"I'm not confirming or denying any dates or time," he said.
With a scheduled weeklong recess next week, the Jan. 31 deadline would permit only one day of committee prior to a markup.
Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the ranking Democrat on the panel, criticized the lack of advance notice in scheduling the hearing with Mayorkas. Democrats suggest that Republicans already have come to a predetermined conclusion on the hearings, citing the commitment to a timeline without proper accommodations to allow Mayorkas to testify, given his busy schedule.
"You notified the guy last week, who, you know, has the third-largest agency in government that 'We want you to testify next week. Oh, and by the way, we want you to be on the second panel,'" Thompson said.
Green had indicated he would accept written testimony from Mayorkas if he could not attend, to which Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg responded in a statement: "This is just the latest example of Committee Republicans' sham process. It's abundantly clear that they are not interested in hearing from Secretary Mayorkas since it doesn't fit into their bad-faith, predetermined and unconstitutional rush to impeach him.
"Last week, the Secretary offered to testify publicly before the Committee; in the time since, the Committee failed to respond to DHS to find a mutually agreeable date.
"Instead, they provided this offer of written testimony to the media before any outreach to the Department. [Homeland Security Committee] Republicans have yet again demonstrated their preference for playing politics rather than work together to address the serious issues at the border."
Green told the Hill, "We're not playing this game anymore.
"Mayorkas' passive aggressiveness about trying to schedule us is a smokescreen. That's all it is. And we're just not going to play that game. We've been after him to come since August. And he keeps saying no."
