Richard Shelby, the longtime Alabama Republican senator, has already cast his absentee ballot in the state's special election — and voted against Roy Moore, his party's nominee.

Shelby had previously said he would write in someone after allegations of past sexual misconduct surfaced against Moore, who has denied the allegations.

Speaking to reporters on in Washington, D.C., on Monday, Shelby would not reveal for whom is vote was made, but said it was "a distinguished Republican write-in," according to Matt Fuller at HuffPost.

"No, no, no, I voted absentee," Shelby said when asked if he had marked his ballot for Moore. "I didn't vote for him. I voted for a distinguished Republican write-in."

Retired Marine Col. Lee Busby launched a write-in campaign Monday as an option for Republicans who do not want to vote for either Moore or Democrat Doug Jones, but Shelby did not say whether he wrote in Busby's name.

The state GOP has continued to back Moore, though some groups, including Birmingham Young Republicans, revoked their endorsement. The state's GOP governor, Kay Ivey, said she will vote for Moore to help preserve the party's slim majority in the Senate.
