Air Marshals Plan to Fight DHS Order to Work at Southern Border

By    |   Wednesday, 30 November 2022 03:24 PM EST

U.S. air marshals are planning to rebel over a Biden administration plan that would reassign them to the southern border, the Washington Examiner reported.

Dozens of marshals have agreed to refuse an order that would have them driving, feeding and caring for migrants, the Examiner reported Wednesday.

The administration's order, to compensate for a shortage of Border Patrol agents, would remove federal protection from 99% of commercial flights during the holiday season, the busiest time of the year for air travel.

"The rank and file air marshals are going to refuse to deploy and risk termination," David Londo, president of the Air Marshal National Council told the Examiner. "You're almost going to have a mutiny of a federal agency, which is unheard of."

Londo added that the marshals were willing to risk everything for how the Biden administration has been risking national security due to its lack of policing the southern border adequately.

"Morale is so destroyed from this," said Londo, whose organization serves as an association, not a union, the Examiner said. "Ive never seen anything like this."

The Department of Homeland Security ordered a minimum of 150 more air marshals to the border on Dec. 7. The Examiner said dozens plan to refuse and are preparing to be fired for taking the stand.

The Transportation Security Administration said in a statement that claims that air marshals will be asked to perform menial tasks were "entirely inaccurate and does not reflect the critical and professional law enforcement role these officers perform."

However, air marshals pulled from planes and sent to the border this week were "heating up sandwiches," driving migrants to the hospital and waiting inside for hours, and effectively babysitting adults who are already in confined spaces, Londo told the Examiner.

"These highly skilled [air marshals] are being made to perform mainly non-law enforcement civilian humanitarian duties," Londo wrote in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, TSA Administrator David Pekoske and the Federal Air Marshal Service Director Tirrell Stevenson.

The Examiner reported that the administration's order would leave just 1 in 100 U.S. flights with federal agents on board — one-eighth of its normal coverage.

FAMS last year asked for volunteers willing to go to the U.S.-Mexico border for 30 days and help process the surge of encountered migrants. However, the government earlier this month announced that the deployments would become mandatory.

The air marshals fought the order but only got the length of deployment reduced from 30 days to 21 days. On Monday, the agency's Miami Field Office announced the deployments now would last indefinitely.

"Air marshals are deployed two to three nights a week. Now they're taking them away, and their marriages are already on the rocks," Londo told the Examiner.
