With the Air Force facing a shortage of fighter pilots, the service is prepared to offer them bonuses over 13 years that would total $455,000 to those who elect to stay.

According to the Air Force Times, Congress already gave the service permission in 2016 to offer pilots $35,000 annual bonuses if they stay on. Air Force Personnel Chief Lt. Gen. Gina Grosso told the House Armed Services Subcommittee Wednesday the Air Force is thinking about offering additional contract extensions to pilots.

Pilots who accept the full extension and who are paid the $35,000 annual bonus to remain in the cockpit could stay on for 13 additional years and make several hundred thousand dollars in bonuses.

Air Force fighter pilots have been leaving the military in recent years in favor of more lucrative jobs with commercial airlines. There are plenty of new military pilots coming through the pipeline, but the issue is retaining them once they are fully trained and have some years under their belt.

According to the Times, Grosso said there is a shortage of 1,555 pilots in the Air Force, including 1,211 fighter pilots.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein said last August part of the problem are the overseas air wars that have been ongoing since the 1990s.

"If we take a balanced approach, we're hoping that we can get these folks to stay," Goldfein said.

A report earlier this month claimed the Air Force had more drone pilots than any other individual type of pilot across its service.
