Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., has introduced an amendment to prevent the Secret Service from spending money at businesses owned by President Donald Trump or his family, The Hill reported on Wednesday.

The amendment to the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act would forbid the agency's funding to "be used to purchase, rent, or otherwise acquire goods or services, including hotel rooms, office space, or golf carts."

Schiff's proposal is part of the upcoming spending package the House is expected to discuss following the congressional recess.

"The immense honor and responsibility of serving as President of the United States should never be exploited for profit or personal gain," Schiff said. "That the Trump Organization is profiting off the Secret Service is an abuse of taxpayer money and an improper method of enrichment."

Trump's travel costs are on pace to be higher in his first year in office than former President Barack Obama's expenses were on travel for his entire eight years in the White House, CNN reported recently.

Secret Service Director Randolph Alles told USA Today earlier this month that 1,000 agents already have reached their federal salary caps and overtime payments for the year due to Trump's extended travel and his large family, who all must be given protection according to the law.
