The House Intelligence Committee will investigate the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told The Washington Post on Friday.

“Certainly we will be delving further into the murder of Khashoggi, and I want to make sure that the committee is fully debriefed on it,” Schiff, the incoming chair of the House intel panel, said in an interview.

“We will certainly want to examine what the intelligence community knows about the murder," he said.

Despite reports that the CIA has determined that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered Khashoggi’s assassination, President Donald Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on the idea that the prince was involved, saying on Thursday that Prince Mohammed “denies it vehemently,” and that “maybe he did” order the killing, or “maybe he didn’t.”

Schiff said that the panel will “look at what the intelligence community assessments are at any given time,” though he emphasized that this was not a characterization of the CIA’s work. “Then it will be quite clear whether the president is relying on the intelligence community and our best source of information or whether the president is representing something very different.”

The congressman also promised to oversee a “deep dive on Saudi Arabia,” and “the war in Yemen,” including the stability of “the House of Saud,” and how “the kingdom is treating its critics or members of the press generally.”
