House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff is "totally, profoundly dishonest" and President Donald Trump and his administration should inform House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the executive branch will not work with the California Democrat's committee until he steps down, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday.
"We don't have to sit around and pretend that this is acceptable," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom. "This is a direct assault on the American system. We now know it was a direct assault because after two years, 500 subpoenas, millions of dollars, you have a [Robert] Mueller report that says there was no collusion."
Schiff on Thursday rejected a call from committee Republicans for his resignation with a prepared statement in which he said a laundry list of the actions of Trump and his were "not OK."
Gingrich also commented about televised interviews former FBI Director James Comey has been giving, saying that even though Mueller has submitted his report and Attorney General William Barr has issued a summary of it, none of the controversy will go away.
"This is the first deliberate at a coup by the deep state, an attack on the American constitution and entire governance," Gingrich said. "The idea that he has the guts to go on national television to say anything given his own track record tells you how sick the system has become.
"The whole system frankly resembles a Jussie Smollett case. Over and over and over again we have these people who are liars, who show back up as though they weren't liars, who pretend they can be relied upon."
