Ex CIA-Station Chief: ISIS Leader Likely Still Alive

(Fox News)

All indications point toward ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi still being alive, former CIA station chief Daniel Hoffman said Friday, noting that the militant leader purposely used references to current events in an audio tape released on Thursday.

"He purposely used references to current events, like North Korea and Syria, to refute the allegation that Russia had killed him in that air strike in Raqqa back in May," Hoffman told the Fox News "Fox and Friends" program.

Hoffman, who served in Moscow, Iraq, and Pakistan, noted that Baghdadi wants to be in Libya, and knows that "cyberspace allows him to do that."

The former CIA chief also was in Iraq the year Baghdadi had been imprisoned in Camp Bucca, and was released, and admitted it is "certainly causing us great angst."

"Obviously he is making a big impact," Hoffman said. "He will carry on making an impact just like Anwar al-Awlaki does even with his sermons, even in death."

Hoffman also discussed the role of China and Russia in social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, saying they both are "very nefarious users of the Internet."

"In China they are stealing technology as well," Hoffman said. "They are trying to mount cyber sovereignty in their own borders. First is to limit our ability of free expression in our country, but, also, to make populist inside China and Russia believe that they shouldn't have confidence in using these social media sites. That's really what causes them concern."

Hoffman said he is "absolutely not surprised" by the news that Russia had been involved in Facebook advertising and postings during the 2016 election.

"I wouldn't be surprised if in this case, that the Russians purposely left discoverable clues, so that we would have less confidence in social media sites that they are somehow connected to Russia," Hoffman said.
